Preamble

The Constitution of India sets out in its introductory statement called Preamble, the aims and aspirations of the people of India. The objectives given by the people are to constitute India into a Sovereign Socialist Secular Democratic Republic and to secure to its citizens justice, liberty, equality and fraternity.

The Supreme Court of India in one of its landmark judgement (Keshava Nand Bharti v. State of Kerala, AIR 1973 SC 1461), has answered the question whether the Preamble is also a part of the Constitution in the affirmative. Thus, when the Preamble proclaims India to be a sovereign, socialist, secular, democratic and republic. There values must be taken into note while interpreting the Constitution.
